Humboldt State University is monitoring the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and closely working with, and following stringent guidelines from, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), State of California, and Humboldt County health agencies.

  • HSU is operating virtually and all instruction is virtual. 
  • HSU’s plans are aligned with the Humboldt County 'Shelter in Place' order. All access to campus facilities is closed to the general public. 
  • The limited services remaining open for students--such as certain Dining locations and the Student Health Center--require social distancing.

La Universidad Estatal de Humboldt (HSU) está monitoreando el Nuevo Coronavirus (COVID-19) y está trabajando de cerca con las estrictas guías de Los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC), el Estado de California, y las agencias de salud del Condado de Humboldt.

  • HSU operará virtualmente hasta el final del semestre y toda la instrucción será virtual.
  • Los planes actuales de HSU están alineados con la orden del Condado de Humboldt de quedarse en casa.  Todo el acceso a las instalaciones del campus está cerrado al público en general.
  • Los servicios que permanecen abiertos para los estudiantes son – Servicios de Comida y el Centro de Salud--funcionarán con personal reducido y deben implementar distanciamiento social.

May you and those you love remain healthy and connected during this really challenging time for all. We know this is not how you imagined the second half of the semester. The situation changes often but your University is committed to making adjustments to support your learning.

Humboldt State University is working to ensure our students, employees, and the community can access the assistance they need in a timely manner. This requires consistent use of phone and email systems, as described below. 

With a virtual campus operation, HSU staff should check their office phone voicemail at least once an hour, and more frequently if needed, during normal University business hours. Please be sure to respond to all incoming calls within 24-48 hours. To check your voicemails:

Thank you all for your feedback, ideas, and questions during this ever changing, unprecedented time.  The purpose of this memo is to reassure you that student employment has been and continues to be a top priority for Humboldt State University. 

What follows are some common questions that we have received in the Human Resources Office, and their answers. 

 

Which employees are NOT allowed to come to work right now?

There will be free chartered buses from HSU to San Francisco and Los Angeles leaving Monday, March 23 at 7:30 a.m. 

The buses will only be filled at half capacity to allow students social distancing from one another, as well as for students to bring their belongings. 

There is currently enough space for 28 students. Seats are first come first serve and students will be notified if they received a seat by Saturday, March 21. If there is enough demand by Saturday, March 21 by noon, HSU may add 14 additional seats.

The following message was sent to the campus faculty today:

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

The COVID-19 situation continues to change rapidly. To assure instructional continuity, teaching operations need to be fully virtual by Thursday, March 26. Further, you will have access to your office only for the purpose of gathering what you need. You will need to move your on campus teaching operations to an off campus location by close of business Wednesday, March 25.

  • Essential employees in support of critical functions will work on campus. All other employees must telecommute.

  • Everyone is asked to maintain social distancing of 6 feet.

By now you’ve heard that Humboldt State University has cancelled the May 16 Commencement ceremony to protect the safety of our Lumberjack community and their families. Families and students eligible to graduate are being contacted with more details.

Please know that this decision wasn’t taken lightly. Commencement is a special day recognizing milestone achievements and we, like you, share in the disappointment that we won’t be celebrating these accomplishments in person.

Humboldt State has suspended all non-essential travel for the remainder of the Spring semester, which is consistent with CSU guidelines that are intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19. As HSU transitions to operating virtually through the end of the semester, many University employees will be working remotely. The appropriate Vice President, working through supervisors, must approve any telecommuting requests.
