Campus Services, Resources, and Information for Students

March 21, 2020 - 12:10pm

Dear Students,

We know that access to campus services is as critical as ever. As we quickly adapt and move to virtual spaces, we wanted to share information on resources so you can connect with student services and continue your education, growth, and learning with HSU.

Below are reminders and updates regarding instruction and campus services. Be sure to keep a close eye on your HSU email and text messages for ongoing updates as well as HSU’s COVID-19 website for the latest information. If you need to sign up for text messages enter your mobile number in the Personal Info pagelet on your myHumboldt home page.

Campus Services

The University is shifting as quickly as possible to virtual operations. Non-essential employees, including student staff, are working remotely. Our commitment to providing essential services to our students remains strong. In many cases the quickest way to get information is to email the department you want contact. You can also ask questions through our ‘Ask a Question’ form available on HSU’s covid-19 website.  To help you locate and contact services on campus you can access contact information through our online directory.

Student Employment

As noted in a prior communication, through 5/15/20, all student employees will continue to be paid for their regularly scheduled time.  For example, if you are scheduled to work every Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you will continue to be paid for those hours even if you are unable to come in.

Understandably, there are a lot of questions about refunds for services. Below are current updates on refunds.

Housing & Dining: We are offering prorated refunds of housing fees, dining fees and parking fees for students who leave residence life.  Refunds for Housing and Dining fees occur once a student completes the check out process. If you are on a payment plan, the Housing Cashier will contact you to discuss how this may impact your Housing and Dining accounts.  Refunds may impact your financial aid. Please review your student account on your Student Center or check with the Financial Aid office to see how these transactions impact you.  Please give staff in Housing, Student Financial Services and Financial Aid 1-2 weeks to process and review your account.

Parking: Prorated refunds are available for Spring 2020 parking passes. You can read more about the process for requesting the refund here.

Commencement: By now you’ve heard that Humboldt State University has cancelled the May 16 Commencement ceremony to protect the safety of our Lumberjack community and their families. Refunds will be given for Commencement fees and regalia.  Details about fees will be provided in future communications. You can take a look at the Commencement site for more information.

Instruction Will Continue March 26
As you are aware, Humboldt State University has suspended face-to-face instruction and is moving to alternative modes of instruction on Thursday, March 26. Faculty will be reaching out to students in their courses. Based on the parameters set forth by the CSU system, this suspension of face-to-face instruction is currently scheduled to remain in place through the end of the Spring 2020 Semester. Alternative modes of instruction will include use of Canvas, Zoom, and other instructional technologies.

For more information on preparing to use alternative modes of instruction please see the newly created Keep Learning website which has many resources to help you succeed at online learning all in one spot.

Stay Healthy
As a reminder, as of March 20, there is currently no confirmed community spread of COVID-19 in Humboldt County. There have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on campus. Humboldt County is under a ‘shelter in place’ order and the State of California has issued an order to “lockdown.”

The University is continuing to take necessary steps to ease and prepare for the possible impact of the virus on our campus community. These steps include cleaning door knobs and elevators and disinfecting tables throughout campus daily. During spring break, custodial staff is cleaning all classrooms, bathrooms, locker rooms, other spaces, and high-touch surfaces-- including furniture--using a hospital-grade disinfectant. These spaces will be inspected to ensure they have been thoroughly cleaned.

Because information about the virus is changing rapidly, please check your email and HSU’s COVID-19 website frequently during the break for announcements from HSU and California State University system.

Don’t forget there are basic steps you can take to protect yourself and help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

  • Stay home if you are sick or have a fever.

  • Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face and eyes, nose, mouth.

  • Routinely clean your home, particularly high touch surfaces like doorknobs.

  • Practice social distancing.

Please know that support and health and wellbeing services are available. Students who would like to talk with a counselor can contact Counseling & Psychological Services in Student Health & Counseling at 707.826.3236 anytime.
