Information on Fee Refunds for Students

Dear Students,

Humboldt State University is committed to supporting your education in light of the circumstances related to COVID-19. As a result, HSU has developed guidelines on refunds, which are consistent with campus policies, Title 5 CCR § 41802 (Title 5) regulations, and guiding principles established by the California State University’s Chancellor Office.

For faster refunds, please make sure you are signed up for direct deposit in your Student Center. Refunds will apply to any outstanding balances on your student account, and any remaining credit will be refunded.

Tuition & Fees
Because Humboldt State University students will continue receiving instruction from HSU instructors, and the grades students receive will ultimately lead to a diploma, we will continue to charge tuition and mandatory campus-based fees for all enrolled students. This is consistent with tuition policies applied to traditional online and in-person HSU courses during the academic year.

If you decide to withdraw from all your courses for the Spring semester, you must do so by April 5 to be eligible for a prorated refund of tuition and fees. Please review HSU’s withdrawal policies for details on the withdrawal process. Financial aid awards for students who withdraw will be reviewed and may be adjusted based on the number of days enrolled.  


Housing, Dining, Parking
Refunds for Housing, Dining, and parking will be processed via your student account and will not impact enrolled students’ financial aid awards

  • Housing & Dining    
    Students who leave Residence Life will receive prorated refunds for Housing and Dining fees once students complete the check-out process. Please allow up to four weeks for Housing and Student Financial Services to process adjustments. If you are on a payment plan, the Housing Cashier will contact you to discuss how this may impact your Housing and Dining accounts. 

  • Parking (Students)
    Refunds for student spring parking permits will be automatically processed through your student account. The spring parking permit will be refunded at 50% of the face value. The student parking permit value is $157.50 per semester, so your refund will be $78.50. Please allow 2-3 weeks for processing.


Refunds for commencement will be processed via your student account and will not impact your financial aid.

  • Fees: A refund will automatically be given to students in the Class of 2020 with graduation dates on file of Spring 2020 or Summer 2020. If you have questions about your refund, email

  • Regalia: Refunds will be given for items that are unopened/unused using the same method you placed your original order. Receipts or order numbers will be needed and you may chose to keep any items except the gowns:
    -- Purchased online through Herff Jones: Fill out the form online or contact their customer service center at 800-837-4235 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST). If you haven’t picked up your regalia packages, the Bookstore will handle shipping them back.
    -- Purchased in person at the Bookstore: Email with your name, phone number, and best time/way to reach you. The Bookstore is closed but their staff will get back to you with instructions on how to do the refund over the phone


Graduate Writing Proficiency Exam (GWPE)

  • Charges for the following in-person GPWE have been credited to the students accounts and refunds will be processed if the student does not have any outstanding charges.  
    --March 28  9 a.m. and 11 a.m. 
    --April 11    9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
